He is a resident of Irkutsk and an anti-fascist. Before his arrest, he worked various jobs: most recently as a security guard and a boat repairer. In April 2025, he was detained in a case concerning calls for terrorism over comments he had posted on Telegram in 2024.

One of the comments concerned the idea that prisoners from the Ukrainian Azov Regiment should be released: “Azov fighters, defenders of Mariupol and other regions of Ukraine. Those are the ones who need to be freed!”

Another episode concerns a comment left under a post stating that Irkutsk governor Igor Kobzev believed that war expenses were “a higher priority” than repairing schools. Kalakin wrote: “Hang him without trial or investigation from a lamppost on Karl Marx Street!”

It is unknown when exactly the criminal case was opened. In May 2025, Kalakin’s name appeared in the Rosfinmonitoring list of ‘terrorists and extremists’. During the investigation, he was under a travel ban, according to People of Baikal.

On October 23, 2025, the court sentenced him to six years in a general regime penal colony.

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
