Citizen of Ukraine, resident of the village of Novoalekseevka, Genicheskiy district, Kherson region of Ukraine. Son of the head of the Muslim community of the Novoalekseevka mosque Khalil Kurtamet, formerly a student of the Islamic college "Imam Khatib".
On 23 July 2022, he was detained in the annexed Crimea, and only got in touch with his relatives on 5 October 2022. On 10 October 2022, he was sent to pre-trial detention on charges of participation in an illegal armed formation: according to the investigation, he financed the activities of the 'Islamic Battalion "Crimea"', created to participate in hostilities on the side of Ukraine. Khalil Kurtamet, Appaz's father, was detained on 7 November 2023 on charges of participation in another Crimean armed formation.
On 20 April 2023, Kurtamatov was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison.
