He lived in Tyumen and served as a contract soldier in the war. In May 2023, he took leave and informed his mother that he would not return to the front. Kasimov left for Kazakhstan. On 23 April 2024, he was detained in Astana at the factory where he worked. He was then taken to the Kazakh town of Priozersk, home to a Russian military unit and the 496th Military Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee. From there, he was transferred to Omsk.

The Kazakh Interior Ministry later told BES.Media that on 13 June, the court in Priozersk decided to deport Kasimov from the country; at the hearing, Kasimov himself requested deportation. On 13 August 2024, he was sentenced to six years in a strict-regime penal colony on charges of desertion, with the Priozersk-based court issuing the sentence while he was in Omsk.

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
