Marat Saybatalov, a resident of Tyumen, was sentenced to six years in prison in October 2005 due to his involvement with a Hizb ut-Tahrir cell in Tobolsk. Despite the charges of organising the activities of an extremist organisation and involvement in terrorist offences, Hizb ut-Tahrir had no direct links to terrorist activities.

On 18 November 2019, Saybatalov was detained in Kazan after a search of his daughter's flat, where he was visiting. He was subsequently transferred to Tyumen. On 21 November, a court placed him in custody on charges of organising the activities of a terrorist organisation, once again related to his association with Hizb ut-Tahrir. On 4 August 2022, Saybatalov was sentenced to 17 years in a high-security prison.

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
