On April 14, 2021, Derendyaev's home was searched. He was detained and later taken into custody on charges of organising activities of an extremist organisation due to his involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses community. Representatives of this community are prosecuted under extremist articles solely for religious activities: meetings, joint worship, and recruiting new followers..
On July 9, he was placed under house arrest. On September 9, a preventive measure in the form of prohibition of certain actions was chosen. On May 13, Derendyaev was sentenced to three years in a general regime colony.
