In 2018, he served in the Ukrainian Aidar Battalion as an assistant grenade launcher operator. He was detained on 13 March 2022 while on the occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine (according to official information, he was detained on 14 March).
He was charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). After Russia declared the DPR to be part of its territory, the charges were reclassified in accordance with the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation: Baidiuk was accused of participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation and violent seizure of power.
Human rights defenders note that he is a prisoner of war and therefore should not have been subjected to criminal prosecution for effectively taking part in hostilities; they also consider the charges to be absurd.
On 17 October 2025, Baidiuk was sentenced to 16 years in a strict-regime penal colony.
