Sergeev was detained at the anti-war rally on 6 March. His relatives lost contact with him, and he was found only on 12 March in the hospital at the Sklifosovsky Emergency Medical Research Institute. He was taken there because he had taken methadone after his arrest. Later Sergeev was placed in custody. Initially, a case of preparation for hooliganism by a group of persons with the use of weapons or (Part 2, Article 213 of the Criminal Code considering Article 30 Part 1 of the Criminal Code) was initiated. On 6 March, an anonymous group in social media website VKontakte Vezhlivye Ludi/Voina (Polite People / War) published a message that two citizens detained on Pushkinskaya Square were found in possession of explosives. Sergeev pleaded guilty. On 5 May it became known that the charge was reclassified to preparation for a terrorist act by a group of persons (Part 2, Article 205 of the Criminal Code considering Article 30 Part 1 of the Criminal Code). On 20 April 2023 Sergeev was sentenced to eight years in a strict regime colony. On 27 September, the court of appeal reduced his sentence by two months.
