A former member of the Kurultai (legislative assembly) of Bashkortostan, he voted against constitutional amendments in 2020.

On 24 March 2022, a search was conducted at his home and he was placed in custody. Chuvilin was accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist community, preparing for seizure of power and attempting to steal or extort weapons.

Later he spoke of threats from the FSB, reported on the use of violence against him and other defendants in the case during transportation to the court, as well as that investigators had put pressure on him in the pre-trial detention centre, forcing him to speed up his study of the case files.

According to Mediazona, testimony against the circle's participants was given by Sergei Sapozhnikov, who also took part in the work of the circle and is listed as a witness in the case. According to him, the circle was preparing to seize power.

On 16 December 2025, Chuvilin was sentenced to a 20-year term in a strict regime penal colony

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
